Who Are You Trying To Please?

DAILY VITAMIN

- Who Are You Trying To Please?

"With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men." (Ephesians 6:7)

If I may ask, why are you a Christian? Really I want to know, because I've figured a lot of people don't even know why they are what they are.

A lot presume they are Christians because it's the only way to not get judged by their family members who are predominantly Christians. For some, it's because they don't want to go to hell. But as nice as that sounds, it's wrong. Being a Christian is beyond just pleasing people or avoiding hell. These come with the actions we take as Christians, at least the latter surely will.

Anyway, being Christian is first about knowing God. Knowing Christ Himself. Peter says all the virtues and glory of this life comes from that knowledge (2 Peter 1:3). Paul showed that this was all that mattered when he said "That I may know Him..." (Philippians 3:10). So the aim of being Christian is to know God and to become as He is, in this life and the next.

In the same light, every action we take now as Christians must reflect this understanding. As a Christian, know that it's not your responsibility to be a people pleaser. And unfortunately that's what we have now. Christians who are too afraid to speak the truth. We see Christians these days on social media defending the same thing the Bible they claim to believe rebukes. What does that say about them? Simple, that maybe they never really believed. We have 'woke' believers who aren't woke as to the truth Jesus taught, truths that transcends mere religion and into the ways of God, but believers who believe being woke is about being accepted by the larger percentage of the world population who are powerful enough to make them relevant. So we have these believers categorizing themselves based on the number of followers they have, their net worth and network etc.

But then there's also us. Those who are too afraid to call them out as politely as possible because we are afraid to lose the little positions we have been given under their leadership. Those who think helping the needy should be based on how we feel each day rather than what God has revealed to us. Those who can no longer differentiate the truth of God's Word from lies because we've lived them both.

You see why I believe Jesus is the Truth is because He was never afraid to speak the truth when it needed to be spoken. Be it to the head of the Jewish church or to His mother, He spoke the truth. Can you? Can I? Aren't we afraid of what people might say or think? Hear this: Jesus exhibited He was life by giving His life that we might have life. He exhibited He was the way by showing us how to build a relationship with God. And that He was the truth by being truth at all times. So to entire  emulate Him, we must choose God first before anything else. Not your reputation, not your fear of losing the materialism you hold on to, but God first. Because the only question that really matters at the end of it all and when you finally meet God is that, with everything you did while you had life, who were you trying to please?
