The Role Of The Church

- The Role Of The Church

“…To what is the kingdom of God like? And whereto shall I resemble it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.” (Luke 13:18-19)

The church is tailored after the Kingdom. In fact, it is primarily an annex of the Kingdom on the earth. The centre of God’s domain among men. And just as the Kingdom reaches beyond all boundaries, the church is designed to grow and spread across all lands.

The Bible illustrates the Kingdom like a king who called all to the feast of his son (Matthew 22:1). Which is exactly what Jesus designated as the fundamental duty of His church (Acts 1:8, Matthew 28:18-20). In other words, the church like the Kingdom carries the Genesis mandate to multiply, replenish and have dominion (Genesis 1:28); and what is it meant to multiply? Righteousness through the knowledge of Christ as aided by the Holy Spirit.

In his many mysteries, Isaiah spoke of a time when seven women will take hold of a man to be joined to him (Isaiah 4:1). But while many take that as it appears, contextually it isn’t. Isaiah was simply affirming what Zechariah was soon to prophesy. In Zechariah 8:20-23, he shows that Isaiah was referring to the church. Recall that all who receive Christ become a part of His bride (the church); so don’t be confused when scripture makes analogies using the womanfolk. Thus, that scripture was speaking of a time when many realizing how lost they are will run into the Kingdom, and that begun the day Jesus was glorified. The realization on the other hand started from the days of John the Baptist. Jesus said that in those days the Kingdom suffered violence, and the violent took it by force (Matthew 11:12); meaning men began to seek for ways to attain eternal life, and they who sought rightly received it.

So, again, it speaks of a time when our sins were washed (Isaiah 4:2-6), bringing us from darkness into the light. Many will willingly come into the light because before this time (through Christ) God would have established His house and multitudes will flow into it (Isaiah 2:2-3). And what is this house? You and I. The church. Not the building where we all assemble to worship, but the people. God transformed us, and by the evidence others see in us as Zechariah depicted they are drawn into their own transformations in Christ. “In your light shall we see light.” (Psalm 36:9). This is the grand sequence of God’s redemption plan, till as much as the whole world is saved (1 Timothy 2:4): Jesus’s eternal sacrifice provides the platform for salvation, the first harvest is borne from it, then become seeds to yield further harvests.

Hence, there are more harvests to come. There is enough room for more. Always. Therefore, as Christ told us Himself, go out there and draw in as many as the Lord helps you to; and like Peter, don’t stop till the harvest size is net breaking (Luke 5:6-7).
