How To Safeguard Your Joy

DAILY VITAMIN

- How To Safeguard Your Joy

"yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior." (Habakkuk 3:18 NIV)

We are in a world that breathes just as much sorrows as felicities on a daily basis. In such a world, it becomes difficult to say completely avoiding being sorrowful is possible; but God says it is. Philippians 4:4 tells us to rejoice always. That means to live every day in the joy of the Lord free of sorrows. And if He says it is possible, then best believe it is.

This doesn't mean things that might want to make you cry won't happen, it just means you won't be focusing on them, so your response won't be determined by them. But the first thing you must know is that true joy comes from God. It is a condition of the Spirit of Christ in us. All the world offers is a state of happiness-- a period of glee defined by happenings. A swing determined by how much jollity you earn as compared to how much despair you have, but God offers much more.

The second thing you should know is that joy is not an emotion, it is a spiritual virtue of strength (Nehemiah 8:10). If that be so, then how do we acquire this strength? We do by focusing on God and not the things around us.

In our theme scripture, Habakkuk tells us how. He says even when things are bad, he rejoices because his mind is set on the LORD who is the strength of his salvation. He who will cause him to rise again (v.17-19). So you consider God's Word not your circumstances, and like David you'd say "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD." (Psalm 27:13-14 NIV).

The ability to stay joyful comes from this knowledge: the knowledge of what God can do. The Bible says Abraham could stay in joy because he knew this too (Romans 4:18-21). Hence, stay in joy today. Learn to believe God's Word more than you accept the things that appear before you.
