Can The Lord Break His Promise?

- Can The Lord Break His Promise?

"God is not a man, that he should lie; He doesn’t change his mind like humans do." (Numbers 23:19 TLB)

The Bible tells us that God cannot go back on His promise, but is that entirely certain? We will find out here.

Paul wrote that God's promises are yes and amen (2 Cor 1:20); meaning they are now and forever certain to come to pass. However, there is a mystery that permits God to turn from His promise to man.

We are told that God kept His Word to David to have his descendant reign forever despite Solomon's misbehaviour, yet there are other circumstances in which he didn't. The Bible says, "...but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him" (Hebrews 10:38). For instance, in the case of Abraham. God promised that He would release his descendants after 400 years and plant them in Canaan again; but when the time came in the wilderness, He was more than ready to annihilate them for their rebellion and build a new nation in Moses.

Thus, know this, almost all promises like prophecies are conditional. So in certain circumstances, if the terms are not met, the promise can be forfeited. Consider Zechariah 6:15, it says " These three who have come from so far away represent many others who will someday come from distant lands to rebuild the Temple of the Lord. And when this happens, you will know my messages have been from God, the Lord Almighty. But none of this will happen unless you carefully obey the commandments of the Lord your God.” (TLB).

Now let's look deeply at Eli's case. God said “Therefore, I, the Lord God of Israel, declare that although I promised that your branch of the tribe of Levi could always be my priests, it is ridiculous to think that what you are doing can continue. I will honor only those who honor me, and I will despise those who despise me." (1 Samuel 2:30 TLB). Did you see that? He promised, yet He changed His mind. So God can change His mind. With Judas, He did even though there is a promised reward for all who followed Christ, and gave his office to another. May we never fail God!

Therefore, be careful to see that you obey God always. 1 Chronicles 28:7 says "And if he continues to obey my commandments and instructions as he has until now, I will make his kingdom last forever," and then he follows up to tell us why this is important to do:

“...Here before the leaders of Israel, the people of God, and in the sight of our God, I am instructing you to search out every commandment of the Lord so that you may continue to rule this good land and leave it to your children to rule forever. Solomon, my son, get to know the God of your fathers. Worship and serve him with a clean heart and a willing mind, for the Lord sees every heart and understands and knows every thought. If you seek him, you will find him; but if you forsake him, he will permanently throw you aside. So be very careful, for the Lord has chosen you to build his holy Temple. Be strong and do as he commands.” (v. 8-10 TLB).

Hence, don't let sin and rebellion steal the reality of God's promise to you, instead give yourself to wholesome obedience toward Him always.
