- How You Act With People Matters
"No, he has told you what he wants, and this is all it is: to be fair and just and merciful, and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8 TLB)
As Christians, our relationship is not just restricted to God alone, but to people as well. God didn't save us to keep us isolated, rather He saved us to lead many in the dark back to Himself - as lights in the darkness. Get it now?
In our theme verse, the prophet under the influence of the Spirit of God tells us that God's expectations is to see us walk in fairness, justice and mercy, and also in humility before Him at all times. He had already told us that these appeal to God greater than any offering we could possibly offer Him in the previous verses. And there are two things we can learn from here.
First, this verse reveals to us that God values our devotion more than our donations. He doesn't just want us to give because we feel compelled to or because we think it's a duty; He wants us to give because we love Him. God wants our love first before any gift, because only our love can truly guarantee our loyalty and devotion to Him even in the worst of times. So, we must love Him as a person; and that He delights in as a well pleasing sacrifice.
Second, this verse tells us that God cares very much about our relationship with others. If you look at that scripture, three acts are attributed to our fellowship with men - be fair in your dealings, be just in your judgments, and be merciful in your actions. This is because to God how we act with others shows who we really are and whom we think He is. Jesus said men will know you are mine if you love one another (John 13:35), and it's still true till date. He also told the Pharisees that while their tithes and offerings are good when borne out of devotion, their acts of justice, merciful love and faith are just as important (Matthew 23:23).
Hence, with God, it is more than just about how we act before Him in "worship"; it's about how we act every day with people. So act as He would all day every day.
Prayer:
God, I thank you because your intentions at all times is to confirm me into your image in both deeds and words; to live as you would so as to draw in the lost just as you did. And I thank you because by your Spirit you accomplish this in and through me every day to the glory of your name. And now I also pray that it continues forever as long as I breathe, in Jesus Name. Amen
