- Our Fellowship Is Eternal

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” (John 14:16)

God promises a union with Him forever. In fact, if you took away the forever part, it loses its essence. Even Jesus told us that He will come to take us that we might be with Him forever (John 14:2-3). And in John 13:1, He made it known that He loves His disciples to the end. You see, this “end” stands for ‘eternally’, and not just ‘permanently’.

Let me explain what I mean by that. The word Permanent is an understatement for His intention towards us. The things that God does in our earthly life are termed to be permanent, but what He desires to do with us are termed eternal in scripture. This is because the term permanence is sometimes used within the closure of time, and thus ceases when a person dies. For instance, if I told you all American Presidents have permanent access to the White House, it would only be valid while they are alive. But when we talk about eternal, we boycott time; and that’s exactly how our fellowship with and in Him is- beyond the limits of time.

In fact, like Paul said, if it did was within the scope of a time limit, we’d be the most miserable (1 Corinthians 15:19). However, eternal goes beyond death. It is past time and above limits. It is forever. That’s why He is called the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob even though they were dead long ago. Humanly, they may have died, but spiritually they are alive in Him forever. And that should excite you. It proves that our life doesn’t end here, it continues in Him; and as long as He lives, as Jesus said, we shall live. Hallelujah!

Our relationship and union with Him is not a short term nor long term program, it is forever. Without any time limit. And the Eternal Spirit bears witness to this. He affirms that we are His forever (Romans 8:16). That’s what heaven represents- eternal fellowship with God. And that’s what everlasting life means- life without end nor limit with God. Please understand that everybody will live forever- both the damned and the redeemed; but the glory of God in salvation is that we’d live forever with God. That’s what makes the difference- the eternal fellowship we’d have with Him.

As David said, “He is our God forever and ever” (Psalm 48:14). So, rejoice! You have an eternal place in God’s heart and Kingdom. That’s why He says nothing can separate us from Him- not time, not death, not anything (Romans 8:38-39). Our union with Him is forever, eternally.

Confession:

I abide in God, and He in me; and this is forever. It cannot be strained by time nor death. It is eternal. He says nothing can separate me from His eternal fellowship, and I affirm that indeed nothing can; for our union is now and forever to the glory of His Name. Amen.
