Becoming A Beacon

DAILY VITAMIN

- Becoming A Beacon

“While Zechariah was alive Uzziah was always eager to please God. Zechariah was a man who had special revelations from God. And as long as the king followed the paths of God, he prospered, for God blessed him.” (2 Chronicles 26:5 TLB)

The scripture above tells us that as long as Zechariah was alive, Uzziah had a mind to please God always. In other words, Zechariah was a positive influence on him; a great role model that kept him in the light of the faith amidst the darkness that covered the rest. And that’s exactly what Christ said we would be. He said we are the salt in our world, without which many would lose their taste. And they would do so, because like an anchor we help them stay strong in the LORD.

That was what Zechariah was to Uzziah- an anchor; he kept him in the light of the LORD for as long as he lived through guidance. The same thing is said of Joshua. Scripture says that “the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that He did for Israel” (Judges 2:7). Just like them, we have seen the great works of the LORD; we have enjoyed bountiful revelations of the knowledge of Christ; and so now He is saying we must do as they did- that is, the responsibility to keep others firm in the faith.

Through our actions and words we are supposed to drive others towards loving and serving God more and more every day. That is, when they see how you act and hear you speak, they are meant to desire God more. You are meant to become a beacon that points them all to God. Jesus said you will light up and when they see it they will come to your Father with praise to glorify Him (Matthew 5:16). In Isaiah 2, He said as an exalted mountain we would draw others into the worship of Jehovah (vv. 2-3).

Hence, start now! Find a young person in your environment, or even someone older- whether in church or just your neighborhood, and help mentor them to wax strong in the LORD. Our light is necessary for their development. Just like the young shoot needs the light of the sun to keep sprouting forth, these young souls- believers and nonbelievers alike –need our light to grow… and in the LORD, since we bear the Sun of righteousness in His fullness within us. Paul did it every day in that having preached and won souls he always returned to confirm their faith till they were strong in the LORD (see Acts 14:22); and we must as well. This is what Jesus saw when He asked us to make disciples- to groom them in the LORD and the Word till they are firm in Him (Colossians 2:6-7).

Confession:

I am a beacon. I lead people to God, and help keep them strong there. In His light I received light, and with that light now, I draw others into His. This I do that all may come to the fullness of the knowledge and love of God in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah!
