Break Free

DAILY VITAMIN
- Break Free
"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace". (Romans 6:14)
The story is told of a man who was passing by a herd of elephants, and saw them being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. Surprised at what he had seen, he went over to the trainer who was just across the road and asked why the animals stood there without making any attempt to get away even when there were no chains or cages, and the trainer said "well, when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free".
A lot of us are just like those elephants. We go through life hanging on to the belief that we cannot do something simply because we failed at it once before. Many people assume that they are still vulnerable to the same weaknesses they had before they got born again. But that's not true. That's not what the Word says. The Scripture says that we are more than conquerors through Christ (Romans 8:37) and can do all things He expects of us through His strength in us (Philippians 4:13); and that also includes overcoming our previous shortcomings.
A young lady in church once narrated to me how, despite being a Christian who loves God with all her heart, she would always watch herself fall whenever her ex-lover came around. It was always as though something came over her, and eventually she would sleep with him. It kept happening for years until a day she got fed up and asked God for the inner strength to overcome this "sin that easily besets her", and stayed conscious of the truth that it is her right in Christ to live above sin. The next time he came around as usual, she overcame that lascivious aura and severed that sick relationship forever. And just like that, we can eradicate every habit that's anti-God in our lives.
You are not the same person you use to be. You need to understand this. Old things are passed away; and because he that is born of God does not have the susceptibility and affinity to commit sin, for His seed is in him, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 John 3:9). What this means is that you can overcome your challenges and weaknesses. Even if it's an overly eating disorder, an alcohol addiction problem, a drug abuse problem, a sexual immortality problem or what have you, you have the capacity in Christ by the Holy Spirit to overcome it (Colossians 2:11). Remember, it is He who works in you to sanctify and strengthen you so as to do His good pleasures. Thus, the pull of sin has no real power over you anymore, apart from that which you choose to give it.
With this understanding, all you have to do is yield yourself more to Him. And you can do this primarily by consistently studying the Word and by prayer. David said "Your Word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11). This was Christ's natural way of life, such that even when the enemy came to Him, he could find no way to overcome Him. In the same way, sin has no more dominion over you unless you let it. Hence, don't let it; now that it's in your power through Christ, don't let it. You have been set free from it, live free indeed. Break free from all your previous weaknesses and excesses. Take your foot off the rope that once held your back from your liberty; and having done that live in the very reality of your freedom in Christ. Hallelujah!

Confession:
I am a child of God. I have been infused with God's very righteousness. I have no part in darkness, and I participate in it no more. The light of God is upon me, and His grace that set me free from the shackles of sin surrounds me. I am a new creation; I'm free now and I'm free forever. Glory to God!
